Top Cat has been making hit songs for nearly four decades. His first his Love Mi Sess (produced by the Legendary Reggae producer Joe G RIP) topped the Reggae charts in February and March 1989 as was awarded Record of the Year and the Entertainment Enterprise Awards that year.
Recording his first album Sensimilla Man for another Legendary producer and member of Sir Coxsone sound Blacker Dread, Top Cat then joined Sir Coxsone sound and was part of the MC team of Daddy Freddy, Tenor Fly, Ricky Tuffy and Jah Prento that toured the UK, Europe and the US during that time. In 1992 both Top Cat and Tenor Fly joined Fashion Records to record projects for release, working with Chris Lane and Gussie P at A Class Studio. Top Cat scored hits for Fashion Records with Gallist/Sess Weh U Want, Request The Style, Bunn The Sensi, as top 5 singles in the Reggae Charts.
With hits like Over U Body, Smoke The Sensi, Wine Up U Body, Sweetest Thing, Congo Natty like Champion DJ, Badder Than Them aka Imperial Majesty, and classics like Push Up U Lighter, as well as entering the Top 30 of the UK national charts with a feature alongside Wayne Marshall with "Ooh Ahh," a UK RnB classic, top 20 and staying in the top 30 for 6 weeks with the UK Garage remix of Request The Style aka RIP Groove, charting again in the top 30 with Danny J Lewis and the song “Spend The Night,”
Going into the new century Top Cat recorded with True Steppers and featured on their album which also featured Victoria Beckham and Dane Bowers as vocalists on the album as well. Top Cat also worked with legendary producer Arthur Baker where Top Cat wrote and performed the song “Jamaica.” In 2003 Top Cat teamed up with Shy FX and recorded Every Day another classic Jungle song, During this time he linked up with up and coming producers like Chase & Status and Deekline & Wizard with whom he scored 3 number one Jungle/DnB with Chase & Status with “Come Back," “Everyday (remix)” and “Ruffest Gunark remix,” and Breakbeat hits like “Outta Space,” which was remixed in 2024 into Jungle/DnB.
During the later 2006 Top Cat recorded the vocals for “Do Da Moves,” for Filmore Fresh in the Comfort Fabric Conditioner advertisement which was narrated by Billie Piper. This sparked a viral dance move and video challenge, and Top Cat was brought back to record the full song which was released internationally.
Top Cat also wrote and published the book “How To MC,” in 2006 which was the first book to break down and explain the techniques need to rap and emcee. This lead to Top Cat doing numerous book seminars internationally in places as diverse as Russia, China, Israel, Canada, Czech Republic, Germany, Bulgaria, Belgium, to name a few. Top Cat has been a true pioneer in teaching the techniques worldwide.
In 2007 Top Cat was the executive producer on the album Two Veterans which is a Jungle album that features Tenor Fly and Top Cat. It features producers like Terry T from Knowledge & Wisdom, KIDLIB, Dj CRS?, and 9 Lives Production. Top Cat went on to produce albums with himself Cat A Log In (2009), Outta The Catacombs (2011), Cat Inna Jungle (2013) and produced the debut album of UK Reggae and UK Garage legend Troublesome called Trouble Some (2013) and also producing and writing the songs for Italian songstress and emcee Ali Roots, Starting At The Roots (2013).
In 2014 Party Next Door and Drake sampled Top Cat's vocals in their big smash hit “Recognize,” which is approaching 300,000,000 streams on You Tube alone.
In February 2019, Sherelle played at the Boiler Room where she dropped the track RIP Groove Refix and it became one of the most viral and celebrated moments in Boiler Room history.
Top Cat did his second major television advertisement in 2021 for Virgin Media with a song called “This One's For You,” mixed by Lava La Rue.
The album Champion DJ was released by Nu Urban in 2010 before they eventually went into liquidation and their assets were bought by Serial Killaz. Serial Killaz remixed the album again in 2022 and re-released the album again. One of the tracks (Friend In Need) went viral on TikTok internationally.
In 2023 Top Cat and Double 99 were presented with the award of “Game Changers,” by DJ Magazine at a ceremony in the city of London. This also marked 25 years since the release of RIP Groove, and Double 99 and Top Cat released a set of new remixes of the track including an orchestral version recorded at RAK studios in St John's Wood.
